Summary:
The stories of young Ben and Rose, separated not only by 70 years in time but also through their telling in that one is written in text and the other conveyed through a sequence of photographs. Although the two stories appear to be drastically different both time and space, each hold similarities that eventually show us how connected the characters really are.

ELA Teaching Suggestions

Comprehension:

Before Reading: Have student flip quickly through the book, then without reading through any of the pages or summary, have them write a short prediction on what they believe the book will be about from seeing the front cover and their quick skim.

During: Give student sticky notes to keep as “stop and jots” to document in the stories what they have questions on, what they liked, what they can connect to.

After Reading: After finishing the story, have student summarize what they had read, in five drawn pictures, captioned by five short paragraphs. (Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, End.)


Speaking/Listening and simple Writing Activity:
           
Student(s) create their own Wonder Cabinet as talked about in the book.

CCSS. Speaking and Listening 5.5 – Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.
            -Include multimedia components (e.g. graphics and sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.


Objective: Students will create their own “Cabinet of Wonders” by picking a specific, educational topic and pick/label and provide a short explanation of the object and why it is in their Wonder Cabinet. –Student will present Wonder Cabinet to class.
